Digging

Skill: Physical development helps fine tune both your child’s gross, and fine motor skills. It is also very important in strengthening muscles, controlling the body and co-ordination. This activity encourages digging in the garden or at the beach.

  1. A range of child-sized garden tools such as a spade, rake,
hand trowel, bucket and a watering can.
Allocate a small area or patch of your garden where your child
can dig. Wearing old clothes and Wellington boots is advised
    for this activity.
Let your child use a range of garden tools to dig in the earth. Ask
them how deep they can dig a hole and which tool will be the
best to use. Ask them what will happen if water is added to the
soil? Will it be easier to dig? Let them pour water into the earth
and continue to experiment with the garden tools.
