This activity will help your child explore expression, find their own voice, and learn how to listen, then respond. Communication is also the basis of making contact with those around you, having positive relationships and learning how to be in the company of others.
This activity Touching table, helps your child to generate language through creative means, by building up their vocabulary and breadth of experience.

Sit your child at a table and put a variety of objects
and fabrics in front of them. Ask them to feel
something ‘soft’, something ‘hard’, something
‘squishy’, something ‘bumpy’ and something
‘smooth.’
Encourage your child to talk to you about what they
are feeling, what colour is the fabric or object,
encourage them to describe it.
Follow up ideas
Once your child is familiar with the objects you could
ask them to close their eyes and ask them to find the
‘silk scarf’ or the ‘soft toy’.
