Signs

Skill: This activity will help your child explore expression, find their own voice, and learn how to listen, then respond. Communication is also the basis of making contact with those around you, having positive relationships and learning how to be in the company of others.

This activity Signs, teaches your child that there are words all around us, and that writing is used as a means of communication.

  1. There are words all around us, in the home and outside.
These can be found on doors, on signposts and inside shops.
Make four signs and show them to your
child e.g. stop, bus stop, push, danger.
    Talk about what they mean.
Go for a walk and see how many other
    signs you can spot.
    Make a list of them.
Talk about the importance of signs
    and why we need them.

Make up some one word signs of your own around
the house e.g. open, closed, push and pull. We’ve
created some simple signs for you to cut out, on
    the next page.
